Review - Battle Athletes Vol. 1 - Anime BATTLE ATHLETES Vol. 1 (Episode 1 & 2) Pioneer - Dub $24.95, Sub $29.95 Pioneer strikes again with another surprises hit. Battle Athletes is a futuristic tale (4999 AD) of athletics put to the max and how it affects the lives of the main characters. The first episode "Mission 1: Chronicle Beginning" starts with an Olympic-Style-History-Lesson about how humanity made it to this point, why athletics are so important, what are humanities dreams, and how it affects those fortunate enough to win the galactic Olympic style games and attain the title 'Cosmic Beauty.' But that is just the beginning. We next meet the main character, Akari Kanzaki a 16 year old girl who's mother was a 'Cosmic Beauty' and who has finally accomplished her biggest dream: "Attending the famous 'University Satellite.'" But that is only character development as we are introduced to the minor characters of every walk of life, from naturalist to shy and reserved to bullies. And the purpose of the series is put in focus as Akari makes a new goal, one that all the other girls on the satellite are training to attain, "Cosmic Beauty." Mission 2: Oath Entrant is the story of cooperation and team work in Zero gravity as a 3 person team battles another team in a Zero-Grave Hockey type game where your performance sets the results on which you will be graded from now on. But what happens when the opposing team is chosen at random and you don't know how to play? The dub is at Pioneers usual best, the voices match the characters, and Pioneer even left the ending songs in Japanese and they actually game us subtitles for them. This 6 episode, 3 volume series is definitely one to pick-up. Because the characters are easy to sympathize with, plus it is very funny at times. Suggested for 13 years old and Up. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 4.) Anime/Manga Forum's Chat Rooms Re-opened After nine days of a chat roomless Anime/Manga Forum the punishment was finally lifted by the SysOps with the posting of this message on September, 13 1998. The forum rules are listed several places in the forum notices. MixxZine Shuts Down Board For those of you who visit Mixxzine's site, have you heard that Mixxzine has closed down the message board? There are a lot of accusations flying around on raa, but Mixx's statement about why they closed the board was along the lines of that the board was being "abused". Fan response is that Mixx didn't like people commenting and complaining about some of Mixx's recent editorial decisions. Fans are also saying that there are documented cases of people who complained suddenly finding their accounts on Mixx's board deleted, and some are voicing suspicions of Mixx deleting or modifying messages posted to their board. At least one vendor (although a minor one -- White Lightning Productions) has publicly posted that they are boycotting Mixx products over their treatment of fans. (!) Anyway, it's not a good scene. Delve into it at your own risk. ~Source: Jeanne Hedge <75512.1214@compuserve.com> from her post of the same name to the A/M Forum message board. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 6.) El-Hazard OAV2 & TV2 (Spoilers) ElHazard OAV2&TV2 (Part 1 and 2) By Dave Baranyi <71640.674@compuserve.com> Last night I finally got to watch the last two parts of the "El Hazard TV2" series. This was the conclusion of a long wait; the show was on Japanese TV in the beginning of the year and the laser disc editions of the episodes started to come out two at a time in March. Now that I've seen the entire series I thought that I would give a summary and some comments on both the second OAV series and the second TV series ( including some "spoilers" placed at the very end ) . El Hazard TV2 is a sequel to the second El Hazard OAV series which came out in 1997. I also have the Japanese laser discs for the second OAV series. ( The second OAV series is currently being released in translation in North America by Pioneer. ) Both the second OAV series and the second TV series are part of the original El Hazard OAV plot line and contain the same characters. Thus, both are different than the "Wanderers" series which came out a couple of years ago and is just finishing up in translation at this time. Both OAV2 and TV2 take place shortly after Ifurita goes into the "Kami no Mei" and stops it. The major "catch" to both series is that they take place before Makoto finds out how to go back and get Ifurita, which is the final scene in the original El Hazard OAV series. This plot device allows the other girls, particularly Nanami and Sheyra-Sheyra to chase and compete over Makoto. There are two other plot drivers which are common to both series; Fatora's attempts to "get some action" with the other girls and Mizu and Fujisawa's stormy relationship. In the OAV2 series, Fujisawa gets "cold feet" on the day of his wedding to Mizu and skips town. Mizu decides to go after him and Makoto, Nanami, Sheyra-Sheyra, Afura, Fatora, and Arale agree to go too. In this series Rune Venus is almost non-existent. At the same time Jinnai is off searching for another Ifurita-like "human weapon" who is supposed to be lost in the desert somewhere. After some humorous misadventures everyone meets at a hidden ruin where an old scientist studies the remains of some ancient technology along with a second Ifurita. This Ifurita is not Makoto's but instead is dedicated to the old scientist. Jinnai comes along with the other "human weapon" whose name is Kariya. At this point Kariya ( who is a very appealing character design ) starts out to regain her former powers and weapons and turns out to be an even more dangerous weapon than the Ifurita "models". The animation in the second OAV series suffers in comparison with that in the first series. I later realized that it was almost the same as in the TV series, which makes me suspect that the second OAV series might have originally been intended to be part of the TV series. The characterization remain interesting, particularly the development of the relationship between Mizu and Fujisawa. Fatora's totally amoral attitude also brings some fun humor to the show. Overall the second series was enjoyable enough for me to want to get the TV series. The second TV series starts out with a really catchy and upbeat theme song and good opening graphics. The story line then goes on to cover the problems that Mizu and Fujisawa are having right after their wedding, as well as Makoto's experiments with more ancient technology. Mizu is upset that she can't go on her honeymoon because her replacement as priestess hasn't arrived yet. Makoto is still having nightmares about not being able to find Ifurita and has a vision of her being dragged into a darkness that is controlled by some unseen evil. The two plot lines come together when Makoto tries out an odd crystal in a set of rings that leads him to rescue a girl who lost her flying boat when she was attached by one of Jinnai's Bugroms. The girl, Kaorula, turns out to be the missing replacement priestess. Kaorula, who is very naïve, becomes very grateful to Makoto for the rescue and so she wants to spend time with him. This is seen as more unwanted competition by Nanami and particularly by Sheyra-Sheyra, who, because of her dislike for Kaorula, gets "uninvited" to the transfer of power ceremony. So when the ceremony takes place and Mizu gives her priestess ring to Kaorula, Sheyra-Sheyra is sitting in Makoto's house/laboratory, angrily looking at more old Rostarian equipment. Unbeknownst to her, Jinnai and one of his Bugroms are in the shadows behind her, planning some mischief. At that point Kaorula makes her first "official" demonstration of her powers, but her powers somehow interact with Makoto's crystal and rings and the equipment that Sheyra-Sheyra is looking at and most of the main cast are flung through time and space to another Rostaria. Makoto and Nanami end up in a dark and foreboding city that is a mix of steam power, flying machines and swordsmen. They find that Kaorula has ended up there too and has gained the attention of the rather odd leader of the city. Jinnai, his Bugrom assistant and Sheyra-Sheyra end up in the snow somewhere outside the city. Fatora, Arale and Arale's twin brother Parnasu are shivering in the cold somewhere nearby. Mizu and Fujisawa are stuck on a flying farm where they run into Afura. They then locate Rune Venus who has taken up with a farmer on the flying farm. So their stories are told in parallel fashion as they slowly find each other and Makoto pieces together what has happened, how they got there and why the world they are in is threatened. For most of the second TV series the plot and characters kept my interest going, so it was a little disappointing when the ending was done in a rush in the final part. With a little more effort and time the resolution of the story could have been better. BTW, along with a re-release of the third laser disc volume came an "extra" story called "Part Infinity". This half hour episode is unrelated to the rest of the TV2 series and just has the same characters going to the "bathes" in the desert for some relaxation. It quickly becomes a "bedroom farce" in which Fatora once again tries to "grab a feel" of the other girls. I can understand why this was packaged as a "freebie"; the animation and plotting are too amateurish to justify selling it on it's own. SPOILER TIME - Now I would like to make a couple of comments about a few things in the shows; the first one has a bearing on the series and the second one had to do with some continuity in the show that made me feel that I had been "had". As far as the first point goes, at the end of the second OAV series the old scientist dies and his Ifurita remembers their time together. It turns out that he had found her when he was a young man. They lived their lives together and he got old while his Ifurita didn't age or change at all. When everyone else left she remained behind to tend his grave. What this implies for the series is that "living happily ever after" isn't an option for Makoto and his Ifurita, because while she may life forever, he won't. The second point is a bit more bothersome. In the opening credits of the second TV series we see Makoto reaching out to Ifurita in a dream-like setting, but missing her. On the box that came with the laser discs Ifurita is pictured along with all of the rest of the cast. And in the first episode Makoto's dream of Ifurita being taken away by the old demon of the Kami no Mei implies that Makoto might find her later on in the series. But this doesn't happen. It turns out to be a red herring and Makoto ends up becoming a "tug-of-war toy" for Nanami, Sheyra-Sheyra and Kaorula. Another character is dropped without warning in the ending too. The farmer friend of Rune Venus just disappears when his flying farm turns out to be part of the Kami no Mei. There is no explanation of his disappearance and Rune Venus doesn't seem bothered by this at all. I can rationalize why Ifurita wasn't brought up in this series; since there were no "super villains" to defeat there was no need for a "super hero". Ifurita's overwhelming powers would kill the existing plot line. But I have to think that the disappearance of the farmer, after the implication of a romance between him and Rune Venus, just struck me as a case of sloppy and rushed writing. ~Source: Dave Baranyi <71640.674@compuserve.com> from his two part post of the same name on the A/M Forum message board. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 7.) The X-Files Movie Sequel Information From the September 15 New York Daily News (http://www.nydailynews.com/today/News_and_Views/Scandal_Sheet/a-5142.asp): Going the ‘X'-tra Mile Mitchell Fink There's definitely going to be a sequel to this summer's “X-Files” movie. Chris Carter, executive producer of the Fox series and the feature film, said Part II is set to shoot next summer for release in the summer 2000 movie season, which coincides with the end of the seventh and final season of the highly acclaimed TV show. “I realize it's a Herculean task to do it in that time frame,” said Carter. “But we're going to try.” By the way, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have already agreed to co-star in the sequel. ~Source: David Swinney member of The X-Files ML. ---------------------------------------------------- 11.) The X-Files Creator Signs Major Deal With Fox TV Yahoo! News Entertainment Headlines Friday September 18 8:23 AM EDT ‘X-Files' creator signs major deal with Fox TV By Jenny Hontz HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - “The X-Files” creator Chris Carter has signed a production deal with 20th Century Fox TV, which sources said was worth $25-$30 million over five years. The exclusive pact includes a first-look feature component and calls for him to develop at least one new series for Fox Broadcasting Co. next fall. He will remain as executive producer of “The X-Files” for at least two more seasons and “Millennium” for at least one more, while he develops new projects for Fox under his Ten Thirteen Prods. banner. In valuing the deal, sources said it was about on par with the deal Warner Bros. TV made recently for “ER” executive producer John Wells. When the film and TV components and “The X-Files” profit advances are factored in, sources say Carter could take home more than $100 million. Neither 20th nor Carter would comment on terms of the deal. Carter's next series for fall 1999 is likely to be a sci-fi drama based on a comic book called “Harsh Realm,” which Carter is expected to write and Dan Sackheim (“The X-Files”) will direct, Carter said. Fox would actually like Carter to develop a second new drama for next fall, if he has the time, but Carter called that “wishful thinking.” “There are other things I want to do,” he told Daily Variety. “But it's really about the workload and not forsaking the shows that are already dear to me.” Carter's feature deal with 20th Century Fox makes a reality Fox's desire to turn “The X-Files” into a feature film franchise, much like “Star Trek” is for Paramount. This summer's “X-Files” feature has earned nearly $150 million in worldwide grosses, and sources say “The X-Files” stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have already agreed to star in the next feature, intended for a 2000 release. Carter joined 20th Century Fox in 1992, and his deal resulted in one of the company's most-profitable franchises and earned him multiple Emmy nominations for his writing and directing on “The X-Files.” As it enters its fifth season, “The X-Files” is still Fox's highest-rated series, and its value to News Corp. is estimated more than $1 billion. Duchovny and Anderson will have six episodes off. There will probably be a couple of these episodes with pre- filmed cut-ins of Duchovny or Anderson. Chris Owens, William B. Davis, Mimi Rogers, and The Lone Gunmen will be in six episodes. Although signed for six episodes, Nicholas Lea will only have a major part in four. Darrin McGavin will be back in a four part story and he will help Mulder by actually leaving his apartment. Laurie Holden (Marita Covarrubias) will be working on “The Magnificent Seven”, but she will be in a couple XF episodes later in the season. There is a possibility that there will be some fallout from the movie with the appearance of Armin Mueller-Stahl as that nasty, Syndicate, scientist boss from Germany, Conrad Strughold. ------- Ophinea +++David Duchovny is slated to write and possibly direct a three part mythology arc, concerning the BIG invasion, for the season finale. LSH: Newsarama Reveals Line-Ups (spoilers) This week's Newsarama reveals the line-ups for the two Legion books (LSH and L* will focus on specific groups of L* for the foreseeable future, though members will be able to appear in either book as stories demand them to). In L*, based on Earth, and Legion HQ: Rokk, Imra, Tinya, Reep, Jenni, Thom, Gates, Jan, Jo, Tasmia, Candi, and Jazmin. in LSH, based on Outpost Allon in space: Garth, Lu, Lyle, Brainy, Ayla, Vi, Zoe, Lar, Jeka, Andrew, Val, and Beck. this splits the groups up evenly by number and gender composition. but let's look at what's going to happen: ? the founders are split up, including splitting the fledgling (well, we've seen NOTHING for a long time) between Imra and Garth. ? the most co-dependent relationhip, Jo and Tinya, is allowed to stay together. ? Reep is separated not only from Ayla, but also from his other close friends, Lyle and Jeka. ? Lar is separated from both Jenni and Tasmia, who both seem to hve been crushing on him. ? Brainy and Gates, who seemed to be working toward a friendship, are also separated. ? the Espionage Squad is split up (plus, I'd imagine Lyle would be able to spy more if he was based on Earth as opposed to being stuck in space). Some pre-existing relationships are maintained by the split (the Xanthuan heroes, Vi/Zoe, Lu/Ayla, Garth/Ayla, Jo/Tinya, Rokk/Imra, Brainy/Ayla), but it just seems weird if they want to concentrate on characterization to split up characters that have been shown to be connected in friendships, romance, etc. Granted the creators have the potential to explore NEW relationships this way, which i hope they will do, especially with characters like Jan, Andrew, Jo, Val, and Lyle, who have few established friendships or the like. ~Source: Basil D Tsiokos member LOSHML. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 15.) Essentially, the Legion chats involve about twenty-five fans shouting repeated questions to the creators. The creators are sometimes unable to answer questions thoroughly or clarify their responses. As a result, misinterpretations may occur on my part. SPOILERS: Information that spoils current or upcoming issues is found toward the end of this report. The creators would like to do a special Legion “half-issue” for WIZARD magazine. Tom suggested that a LSH #1/2 could feature the origin of RJ Brande. Tom is talking to assistant editor Frank Berrios about doing a Legion 80-Page Giant or Annual for next year. Tom has been assigned the recoloring job on a NEW TEEN TITANS collection for next year, which will showcase some relatively early artwork by the ever-popular George Perez. Tom believe that the Legionnaires are almost always on duty, and take breaks only on request. In particular, we'll see Tinya and Jo take some time off soon in L*. The same characters from L* #1,000,000 will star in LSH #1,000,000, but Tom warned us of “a sudden twist to the whole story.” XS will be tied up in the 20th Century of FLASH for a while. Maybe she'll finally get a boyfriend when she returns. Tom said Jeff is currently working on an appearance of the WorkForce. There, we'll see at least some possibilities of new WF members. LSH #110 will introduce a “new and improved Brainy.” This'll be the last of Brainy's changes for at least a while. Someone else altered by the anomaly, Zoe, will indeed go back to her old personality, but Tom didn't say when. Maybe some day we'll learn an explanation of the anomaly, and if anyone other than Brainy, Zoe, and Laurel was changed. +++++++ Jeff's workload is about 5-9 pages a week. Tom isn't yet finished with coloring the CRISIS “#4.5” special. Chris Sprouse's L* covers start with #67. There are no current plans for Tyroc or the Wanderers to return. Tom says “maybe” for the Fatal Five and is “unsure” about the Subs. It'll still be a while before TInya is reunited with her third body. Tom noted that if the Multiverse were to return, “it could provide some interesting times for the Legion.” Another teamup with Superboy is currently in consideration. If it happens, the story will be “really surprising,” according to Tom. Tom is especially impressed by new LSH penciller Scot Kolins' pages with Karate Kid and M'Onel. It was the writers who decided the lineups of the two teams of Legionnaires, who'll split up in L* #66. Otherwise, all the girls would be in Jeff's book. Thunder's real identity is very secret and she's not sure if she'll share it with the Legion. She won't tell the Legion about their future, since she doesn't know much of it. But the team will know she's from the future, and not just Lori in disguise. The spotlight shines on Lori in L* #69. When asked if she would become Glorith, Tom teasingly replied that that would be too obvious, but she will be changed in that issue. (Consider that maybe this “change” is just another H-Dial identity.) - -- Alex Tam goldie@intergate.bc.ca; Nachro2 on AOL -------------------------------------------------------------------- 19.) A Few Crass Words from Kaneda Greetings, ladies and gentlemen, boys, girls, your Majesty, your Holiness, and fungi of all ages. What's on the agenda this week? One word. That word is, "EVA!!!!!". I have to talk about Neon Genesis Evangelion sometimes. To date it is the deepest, most intriguing, and generally the most "kick-arse" anime I have ever seen. I'm sure there's a few other animes out there that might actually be better, but for now this is the best I've seen. If you haven't seen it, go see it. The reason I bring this up, obviously, is because I have NOTHING to talk about. I never HAD anything to talk about, and chances are I never WILL. Then why, do you ask, do I have my own column? Beats the crap outta me. I'm sure by now you've heard that OMEGA is christening a new name for the Digested Digest. Needless to say it is a rather inappropriate name... After all, who'd want to subscribe to a newsletter called "[OMEGA] Digested Digest"? Think of it this way. It's been Digested. Fully. What do you get when something is fully digested? My sentiments exactly. It should at least be renamed, "Partially- Digested Digest"... I'd rather by a bolus, or even a quarter-gallon of chyme, than be a "Fecal McNugget"... That was for all you human biology fans out there. I have run out of things to talk about. Thanks for reading. - Kaneda ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 20.)
