OMEGA's Ramblings The first question you must have is…WHY? Well, I always get/find info that is old/out dated. But most people have never heard it before. So this, the first of many specials, is going to tell some of those forgotten tid-bits before they disappear forever. But, don't worry. These specials won't be done very often (maybe every 10 issues?), but unlike the X-Files Special in issue three, DD will keep the regular topics it always has. Enjoy! THE BLACK CAULDRON REVIEW THE BLACK CAULDRON 80 Minutes, Rated PG, $16.99 Where do I begin with my review of TBC? Well lets start with my personal story associated with the film. Back in 1985 I was 4 years old, and I had a few of TBC promotional items (like a poster and the stickers, but I only own the 'Gurgi' sticker currently). My family and I went on vacation for the entire week that TBC started showing in my area. When we got back it was gone. One week. And the movie was gone. That's my story. Until recently, I had forgotten about the desire of wanting to see TBC. I was flipping through one of the many Disney Encyclopedia's at a 'The Disney Store' in Atlanta. When I saw 'Gurgi' and remembered everything. I read the article and quickly devoured the knowledge the other volumes had to tell. I soon began spouting my own bread of 'Disney Bashing/Praising' to all the friends who cared to listen. I thought If Disney isn't going to release it then lets start a petition, well I waited to long and learned I didn't need to do that anyway. Because in Zentertainment my heart was lifted. And that leads us to yesterday. August 3, 1998 - 10:01 PM, Target had just closed so not wanting to go home I staggered into a chilling Grocery store and went to the magazines… and there it was hidden in the 'Melody Time' display. Three copies of The Black Cauldron. I quickly scoped up a copy and rushed to the cashier. Waited my turn and scanned the treasure myself and threw a $20 at the man, got my change, and muffled out a 'Thank You.' And ran out of the store laughing hysterically. But enough about me… Disney's Story starts somewhere back in the mid 1970s when they secured the rights to make Lloyd Alexander's THE CHRONICLES OF PRYDAIN series into an animated movie. By 1980 pre- production had begun. The movie was in production when a snag was hit, the money ran out. Dipping into Disney Companies reserves they continued the film. It seen became the first animated movie of it's scale to use CGI. The movie soon was finished in 1984 and was sent to the audio studio for Dubbing. A few big name voice actors for the time were picked. And soon after the movie was released in 1985 to a PG rating. Needless to say the movie flopped and it put it down with its' list of failures like FANTASIA and BAMBI. So what was so bad about the movie? Upon my viewing I have to say…. NOTHING!!!!! This is the BEST Disney movie ever created. It has ZERO singing. It is an EPIC Quest with memorable characters and some realistic situations. You care about the characters and definitely get a sense of accomplishment from their adventure. The villain of the story has to be the strongest ever seen in a Disney movie. The Horned King is pure evil and the only one who has ever wanted to take over the whole world instead of get even with one person. And how does the Horned King go about world domination? The Black Cauldron of course. Any more would spoil the movie. Just a comment of the VHS release. The Chromium FX packaging is really cool (all that means is it is tin-foil with color and stamped indentions in it). Now if you have Dolby Surround Speakers the movie does go up and down at points (the voices are softer than the sound effects at times). But those flows are forgivable considering the movie was made in 1985. All I wish Disney had of done was made either a DVD or Laserdisc version of the movie. If you like Fantasy, Anime, Medieval stuff, Disney movies, or ever wanted to see what The Legend of Zelda would really look like it was truly done right in a movie. Then The Black Cauldron is the movie for you. And I am not just saying this because I have wanted to see the movie for 13 Years. I put my all behind this movie when promoting it to my friends by saying it is 'The Best Disney movie I have never seen.' And I must say now that I have seen it 'IT IS THE BEST DISNEY MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!" For my pictured review of The Black Cauldron (with the Zentertainment Announcement and TBC Box Text included). I'm starting a petition concerning the rushed release of Final Fantasy VII and the hope that this will be fixed in the US version. I'd like you to give it a look, and hopefully to post it on your website. Here it is: Squaresoft, in an effort to get Final Fantasy VII out in Japan on the deadline of January 31st, released the game unfinished. The true ending, while on the games 3rd CD, has been locked out, and important story elements were left unresolved. Information on the details of this have been supplied by Lansing, a former employee of Squaresoft who worked on the game, which comes to us via Miranda's Cafe Final Fantasy VII. Oh no. They did it. I wouldn't have known, because I had access to the full set of FF7 info... but they did. I guess this means that I should have actually played through things to see if anything had changed, instead of getting tired of the game after translation purposes. I think everyone is gonna kill me for my insolence, because I really should have played through the game more fully before I said anything to make sure it was still possible. Throughout the past few weeks, I, myself, have been wondering why people were having such a hard time reviving Aeris, because according to everything I saw through the scenario translation process, it could be done fairly easily. Here's the Aeris revival process, in full. First off, throughout the game, you must make the logical choice of things to say to Aeris to indicate that you like her. You must never hurt her in any way by choice. What happens in scenarios, however, cannot be avoided (Aeris' beating by Cloud, for instance). Also, with the sick man. There is no medicine, but you could have Aeris tend to him and make him feel better, by learning about her heritage and returning to Midgar in the first CD. By doing this, the "GENERAL" as people call him, would trust you, and request you go buy his dying friend something from the store. A simple quest. After doing so, the GENERAL would tell you thanks, and that if there was anything else you need ever, to ask him for help. You then see a scene with his friend dying. A sad scene. :( Now, continue through the game as normal, and after Aeris dies, go on to the second CD. Once here, return to Midgar with the key from CD1, and the GENERAL will ask you where the nice girl (Aeris) is. You explain that she has died, by Sephiros, and that there is no hope in reviving her. There would be a chance, but only if you could go deep under the waters of the floating castle (where Aeris died). The GENERAL would tell you that he thinks he may be able to help, and to come back later. After this meeting, you were to go on to Aeris' church, where there would be a long scene with her spirit. If you had been nice to her, she would express a desire to return to help you. After doing this, return to the GENERAL, who would provide you with a Yellow materia that allowed the entire group to travel through water. With this, you could return to the floating palace, go up to Mr.Fish, and once you touched him, you would be transported under water, to a cavern, where, at the end, lay Aeris' orb/life essence. With this orb, Bugen Hagen could complete the ress process, and you could move on to a happier life with a neater ending. Well, the FMVs were all completed on time, but a lot of coding was not. They then delayed the games release by a month (Dec -> Jan). However, it seemed that even by late December, the coding STILL wasn't finished, so Square told production to wrap it up quickly. In order to get the game out on time, SqJP sacrificed what could have been a miraculously better game than FF7... The main coding that was not finished dealt with manipulating the transparent polygon of Aeris' spirit in the church. Since they were forced to wrap production up to meet the many-delayed deadline, they had to stop with the Aeris process unfinished. So, to keep things from ever happening, they simply removed the one item that allowed any hint of the process to take place... The Key to Midgar, from the first CD. This completely stopped the ability to ressurect Aeris. HOWEVER, they left out the removal of one thing, and that was the split-second of seeing the ghost of Aeris once you return to the church. Unforunately, this, along with the insanely big size of the ending MOV, are the only hints to Aeris' existence that we have. Other than the original FF7 scriptline, from which all the above information came. I ran across this info while talking to John H. (another temp like me) trying to get some US script from him for our channel's page. Also, Seph wanted it. I asked him if it would be alright for me to release the script info in an altered form, and to release info on gameplay, such as Aeris' death/ress. Then he told me the deadline story, and I almost had a heartattack. He said that the process can still be done to its completion, sans a couple of scenes, with the Game Shark, but until someone develops a MOV player that handles multiple sector files, the true ending will not be seen. Oh, and about the ending... There were supposed to be scenes with the hidden characters, but things got cut short, so they weren't added, and the end of the ending was terrible, without even the typical "THE END" in the stars. This makes me wish I had left Square earlier than I did, realizing that deadlines and business are more important to them than the games. All they care about is money." This is saddening. People have been waiting for months for this game, only to find it was released unfinished and not as it was intended to be. Many long time Square fans will surely be unhappy to know that Square released an unfinished game on them, and may lose faith in the company. But there is still hope! The US version of Final Fantasy VII does not come out until September 7th, which is plenty of time for Square and Sony to add the true ending and Aerith's resurrection back into the game. If you want to play Final Fantasy VII as it was intended, join the petition to urge Square to fix this problem by sending mail to LElkins131@aol.com. Also, tell your friends about the petition and urge them to sign, and contact as many gaming websites as you can to spread the word about this petition. As you can see, it's very important to spread the word about this and make Square fix the US version. If you would list this petition on your website it would be greatly appreciated. Not what I would call meeting all my demands, really. Keith informed us that Tom McCraw had just finished colouring LSH #6. Tom said that Tenzil Kem was one of his favourites. When pressed, Tom replied, MATTER EATER LAD. What's the matter with you. Aren't you a real fan? Mary said she thought Mon-El, Dev-Em and Saturn Girl were the best. She added that they would be central to the books plans if she had her way. Keith reminded her she was only co scripter. When asked, Keith replied, WE write the book. Tom, Mary & Al smiled at this gesture. Mark Waid looked nervous and sweaty. Mark confessed he had a huge love of the LSH, and said only Mad Voices could drive him away from his dream assignment. Keith said they intended to maintain the spirit of the LSH. He also said he held all the characters in the same regard. Tom remarked that Karate Kid may return. Keith remarked that it would only be in a Shanghalla spotlight. Mark said the book would pick up the book a little while after the last series ended. Al said Timber Wolf was his favourite, and that he had many ideas for the book, all of which involved Timber Wolf, and maybe a new character he was developing. Mark Waid assured fans that new characters would be introduced slowly, and all main characters from the previous series would be looked in on in the first few issues. Tom & Mary added that they wanted to give the 30th century a more layered appearance. They hinted that Wildfire had a major role in the book, and promised that he wasn't just sunning it somewhere. Keith stated that no continuity changes would be needed, and that Superboy's role had been defined and all were happy. Mark added that there were one or two things he needed to clear with the Superman office, but it was all pretty much locked. Tom felt that Rokk Krinn would be the spotlight early on. Tom replied, COSMIC BOY. Do you read the book, or what. Mary said that the unresolved plots would be addressed as soon as possible. Mark replied that Paul Levitz was sure his baby was in good hands, and would have a hands off role as vice publisher when it came to the LSH. He had not read any of the issues pre-publication, as he wanted to be “surprised”. Keith felt, on that score, Paul wouldn't be let down. When pressed, Tom said that Blok, Dirk, Reep, Rokk, Lydda, Jo, Salu, Ayla and an old villain would have the spotlight in the early issues. Mary cut in and added, Sun Boy, Chameleon Boy, Cosmic Boy, Night Girl, Ultra Boy, Shrinking Violet and Lightning Lass. Al added Timber Wolf to the list. Then changed his mind. He apologised for the confusion, he was just so excited to be finally given the chance to help create a mythos. He had not written much before, but he was bursting with ideas. He thought it would be neat to see these ideas in print. He also loved asteroids, and felt the LSH could benefit from asteroids. He wasn't sure in what way, but felt that Keith would work it out. Keith caved in and revealed that he had designed one new costume. He would not reveal who it was for, but would say that we would see a lot of it. Keith said that the Ultra Boy Phantom Girl romance was an integral part of the LSH, and that he intended to treat it as such. He had numerous plans for Tinya, and was having trouble fitting them all in. Phantom Girl's phasing powers were useful to the team, he felt. Mary said she had enjoyed the Brainiac 5 Supergirl romance, and she felt it was sad the way it had ended. She thought that Brainy needed a new love. The Time Trapper will return. Rond Vidar would return. There were no plans for Mordru in the pipeline. There were no plans for the subs. Keith admitted it would be a good idea if the subs were handled as a competent team for once, and scribbled something down. There are no plans for Element Lad. Tom & Mary wanted to bring a sense of social responsibility to the LSH. When pressed, Tom said he felt that just being heroes wasn't enough. They should contend with their demons and the like. He added that not all the cast would be shown in a good light. Keith added that this had given him an idea for his art style. Tom addressed a fans worry by pointing out that the LSH was still remembered galaxy wide, and that they still had a unique place in the heart of Earth. Mary said she also wanted to tackle some environmental issues. When pressed, she said, specifically, acid rain, toxic waste, pollution and the like. She added that just because the 30th century is a utopia, if these matters weren't addressed in the 20th century, they would still exist in the 30th. And since nobody was addressing them now, she would have to do it. She felt that anyone could change the world if they tried, although she admitted that it was probably easier to destroy it than change it. Keith felt that maybe Utopia wasn't the best word to use. Keith felt his art on this book was some of the best they'd ever seen. Mark Waid laughed or coughed. It was hard to tell. He pointed out that, as some time had passed since the end of the last book, some of the characters would have moved on to pastures new. Keith felt this was particularly apt for Garth and Imra. Tom added that anyone who didn't know who those two were shouldn't buy the book. Keith felt they should, as they'd have less attachment, and thus more expectation. Mark felt the book was more accessible than it had been for a little while. When one fan commented that the book hadn't been out for a little while, Mark refused to laugh. He also felt that starting with a new series would draw people to the book. Sales weren't bad, but could be better. He felt this series would confirm peoples expectations of what life in the 30th century should be like. Keith felt that this book would be the definitive way to tell a LSH story. Tom said they would be re-introing old villains. They wanted to save all their originality for the heroes. They also added that some of the minor players would get bigger roles. Keith was surprised to learn that Collosal Boy had the longest membership record. He said he would look into that. Al Gordon wanted to remind people that Timber Wolf was cool, and that he had a new character in the works, who had a super backstory waiting to be told. All he would say is that the character was a little Impulsive, and that he would be introduced as a member already, to give Al some lead in time, to fully fill in the backstory. Keith said that Blok would eventually find another Dryad. Tom & Mary would be handling the letters pages, and they promised it would have the bits of Legionnaire's business. They would also be preparing text pages to help flesh out the political structure of the 30th century, something they felt hadn't really been tackled before. They admitted that, being members of an apa, they would try to tackle some problems certain fans had with the book. They denied they were agenda led. They replied that letters to the last few issues of old series would not be run, as they no longer applied. Mark stated this was due to space considerations, not due to any form of snobbery, and declared the chat over. Keith warned fans to expect the unexpected. ~ Thank you Steve Block, stephen.block@virgin.net for posting that on the LSHML a while back. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7.)
