A scientist who was determined to prove that time travel was possible, Rip Hunter successfully built Earth's first time machine. He was convinced by his friend to take a dying Booster Gold (see Booster Gold) back to the future from which he had come.

While in 2462 A.D., Hunter discovered that his later experiments had succeeded, indeed, it was in a later model of Hunter's machine that Booster Gold had originally journeyed to 1985. To his dismay, Hunter learned that time travel works in a limited manner. His original method affected a one-way trip. After helping rescue Booster, Hunter jerry-rigged Reinhold Borstein's time travel device (see Jonah Hex) so that they could all return to 1987. Distraught at his apparent failure to explore time, Hunter accepted a research post at Booster Gold International.

Hunter is a scientist, not a fighter. His keen intellect has enabled him to develop his time machine and master other electronic machinery.
